SCF announces launch of new sales division; now representing SXSW festival favorite, “LICKS”
Social Construct Films is pleased to announce the launch of our new sales division, now representing the SXSW festival favorite, LICKS, for North American distribution rights (all rights available).
‘LICKS’ follows the story of a young man, D, as he returns to his Oakland neighborhood after two years served in prison for a botched robbery. In the days after his release, we are taken into D’s world and follow him as he decides what direction he wants to take his life after being locked up. “Licks” referring to liquor stores in robbery, is an urban crime drama set in the sprawling projects of East Oakland. The film gives nods to Menace to Society and Boys in the Hood, and is most comparable to Sundance ’13 winner / Weinstein released FRUITVALE STATION.
LICKS premiered at SXSW ’13 and since then the filmmakers have hosted over 10 sold out promo screenings in NY, LA and around the SF Bay Area where the film takes place. The film played Milan International Film Festival to rave reviews, won the programmers award at the Sidewalk Film Festival in Alabama and won 4 awards at the Chelsea Film Festivals in NYC including best picture and best director. LICKS is the debut project of filmmaker Jonathan Singer-Vine.
